Smart Water Meter Procurement Checklist

A useful smart meter specification describes the application, evidence and service expectations—not just a preferred technology. This checklist helps project teams compare proposals on a consistent basis.

Document the application

Provide pipe size and material, expected flow range, pressure, temperature, fluid quality, installation orientation, environmental exposure and access constraints. Identify whether the purpose is operational monitoring, allocation or regulated billing.

Request model-specific evidence

Ask for the exact datasheet, accuracy and flow-range definitions, pressure rating, enclosure rating, output options, power assumptions, certifications, installation limits and warranty. Treat generic portfolio claims as background, not acceptance evidence.

Specify data and security requirements

Define reading interval, local display, protocols, gateway needs, data export, API availability, device identity, encryption, user access, hosting, retention and ownership. Include acceptance tests for communication and integration.

Compare lifecycle cost and support

Evaluate installation, connectivity, software, battery or power service, calibration, spares, training and support—not only unit price. State response times, replacement procedures, documentation and exit or data-migration requirements.
