Water Meter Accuracy, Flow Range and Sizing Explained

A meter’s accuracy depends on the specific model and operating point. Selecting a size solely from the pipe diameter can leave a meter operating outside its useful flow range, while selecting too small a meter may create excessive pressure loss or exceed its limits.

Read accuracy with the flow range

Ask for the accuracy specification and performance curve across the operating range, including any stated conditions. A single percentage without the relevant flow interval and test basis is difficult to compare. Confirm the evidence and standards applicable to the procurement.

Estimate the real flow profile

Gather minimum, typical and peak flows where possible, including intermittent use and low-flow periods. Consider future demand, leakage monitoring objectives and the pressure available. Use measured data or a qualified engineering estimate rather than relying on nominal pipe size alone.

Check installation effects

Upstream disturbances, valves, pumps, pipe reductions, air, vibration and mounting orientation may affect performance or violate installation requirements. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact meter and document commissioning checks.

Compare total operating fit

Include pressure loss, power, readout, connectivity, maintenance access and replacement availability in the selection. Request the model’s datasheet, installation manual and applicable test documentation before purchase. Ask Dropwise for model-level specifications.
