Smart Water Management for Schools and Campuses

Schools and campuses often have dispersed buildings, seasonal occupancy and several high-use facilities. Smart meters and purposeful sub-metering can help estates teams understand demand, investigate unusual use and support conservation programmes.

Map buildings and high-use areas

Separate academic blocks, hostels, kitchens, laboratories, sports facilities, staff housing and irrigation where the plumbing layout allows. Prioritise locations that have high demand, limited visibility or a clear operational owner.

Account for the academic calendar

Term dates, holidays, events and hostel occupancy can change normal demand. Compare like-for-like periods and retain notes about shutdowns or special activities so teams do not mistake a schedule change for a leak.

Make water data part of maintenance

Route alerts to the estates team and record what was found. Repeated overnight flow, tank overflows and irrigation faults may become visible in interval data, but each pattern should be verified on site.

Use the programme for engagement

Dashboards can support student sustainability initiatives when the data is explained carefully and privacy is protected. Operational reliability remains the priority; public displays should use aggregated, quality-checked information.
