Water Sub-Metering for Apartments and Residential Communities

Apartment sub-metering measures water use for individual units or shared areas within a larger property. A well-planned project can make consumption more visible, but the meter layout, billing rules and resident communication are as important as the hardware.

Define the property objective

Clarify whether the project supports internal allocation, leak investigation, conservation feedback or a future billing process. Confirm applicable local rules and the property’s legal and governance requirements before changing how residents are charged.

Design the meter map

Document each unit’s supply, shared amenities, irrigation and common services. Record pipe size, installation access and the number of meters required. Keep meter labels aligned with apartment and building records so readings can be interpreted without ambiguity.

Choose an appropriate reading model

Manual reads may work for small portfolios; larger communities may benefit from electronic collection. Compare connectivity coverage in meter cupboards, battery replacement access, reading frequency and export formats. Test representative units and common areas before standardising.

Build trust through clear communication

Explain what is measured, how readings are used, how residents can raise a query and how the property handles estimated or missing data. Validate the installation and establish a maintenance schedule. Talk with Dropwise about metering for residential projects.
