Cooling Tower Water Monitoring with Smart Meters

Cooling towers can represent a significant and variable water use in large facilities. Metering make-up and blowdown flows gives engineering teams better evidence for maintenance and efficiency decisions when readings are interpreted with operating conditions.

Measure the right flows

Common measurement points include make-up water and blowdown. The useful arrangement depends on the system design, water treatment programme and available access. Coordinate the plan with the cooling-system operator and water-treatment specialist.

Interpret data with plant operation

Cooling load, weather, cycles of concentration, maintenance and water quality all affect consumption. Compare readings with relevant operating data instead of judging a total in isolation.

Investigate changes systematically

A rise in make-up flow can have several causes, including changed load, control settings, overflow or leakage. Check the meter and communication path, review controls and inspect the system before deciding on corrective action.

Select equipment for the environment

Confirm pipe size, expected flow range, water quality, pressure, temperature, enclosure, power and communication requirements. Use the exact product datasheet and qualified engineering review for final selection.
