Using Water Meter Data for ESG and Sustainability Reporting
Smart meter data can strengthen water reporting when organisations define boundaries, ownership, quality checks and evidence. A dashboard alone does not make a figure report-ready; the underlying data process must be controlled.
Define the reporting boundary
Document which sites, sources, time periods and water categories are included. Treat purchased water, groundwater, tanker supply, harvested rainwater and recycled water consistently with the chosen reporting framework.
Create data-quality controls
Assign owners for meter inventories, missing readings, estimated values and corrections. Use reasonableness checks, source reconciliation and change logs so reported totals can be traced back to evidence.
Keep operational and reporting views aligned
Facilities teams need detailed interval data for action, while reporting teams may use consolidated monthly or annual totals. Maintain a controlled path from raw readings to the reported figure without losing definitions or adjustments.
Avoid unsupported claims
Explain methodology, limitations and estimation. A lower measured total may reflect operational change, occupancy or boundary differences; attribute improvement only when the evidence supports it.
